Quality of Decision-making Processes: Decision-making processes in Radioactive Waste Governance - Insights and Recommendations WP3
Quality of Decision-making Processes: Decision-making processes in Radioactive Waste Governance - Insights and Recommendations WP3
Work Package 3 (WP 3) set out to provide practical recommendations for the design and implementation of a “robust” decision-making process (DMP) in radioactive waste governance/governance of radioactive waste management (RWG).

Spent Nuclear Fuel Management: How centralized interim storage can expand options and reduce costs - A study conducted for the Blue Ribbon Commission on America's Nuclear Future
Spent Nuclear Fuel Management: How centralized interim storage can expand options and reduce costs - A study conducted for the Blue Ribbon Commission on America's Nuclear Future
The purpose of this study is to assist decision makers in evaluating the centralized interim
storage option. We explore the economics of centralized interim storage under a wide variety of
circumstances. We look at how a commitment to move forward with centralized interim storage
today could evolve over time. And, we evaluate the costs of reversing a commitment toward
centralized storage if it turns out that such a decision is later considered a mistake.

Site Evaluation Process -- Yucca Mountain Examples Presented to BRC -- Disposal Subcommittee
The principal factors that affected the scope of scientific investigations at Yucca Mountain over the last 20 years included both regulatory and technical aspects. Examples of regulatory factors include the regulations themselves as well as the associated quality assurance requirements. Examples of technical factors include the repository and waste package designs, new information that affected the post-closure safety basis, and technical reviews from peers, stakeholders and the regulators.

Site Selection Procedure for Repository Sites, Recommendations of the AkEnd - Committee on a Site Selection Procedure for Repository Sites
With the establishment of the “Arbeitskreis Auswahlverfahren Endlagerstandorte” (AkEnd) – the Committee on a Site Selection Procedure for Repository Sites, in the following referred as to as the “committee” - the Federal Minister for the Environment set up a discussion forum on radioactive waste disposal, which has been called for by the public for quite some time.

Options for Developing Public and Stakeholder Engagement for the Storage and Management of Spent Nuclear Fuel (SNF) and High Level Waste (HLW) in the United States
Options for Developing Public and Stakeholder Engagement for the Storage and Management of Spent Nuclear Fuel (SNF) and High Level Waste (HLW) in the United States
This report puts forth a number of options and recommendations for how to engage stakeholders and other members of the public in the storage and management of spent nuclear fuel and high level waste in the United States. The options are generated from a scientific review of existing publications proposing criteria for assessing past efforts to engage publics and stakeholders in decision-making about risky technologies.

Program Plan for the Development of the Bedded Salt Pilot Plant
Program Plan for the Development of the Bedded Salt Pilot Plant
A program leading to the establishment in FY I983 of a pilot plant for storing radioactive wastes in bedded salt is described. The program consists of laboratory and field investigations of factors affecting the suitability of a specific site in southeastern New Mexico; of more generally applicable problems associated with geohydrology and rock mechanics; and of considerations bearing on the operational safety of a pilot plant repository. Tasks concerned with the engineering development and design of the facility are also included.
REVIEW OF POTENTIAL HOST ROCKS FOR RADIOACTIVE WASTE DISPOSAL IN THE PIEDMONT PROVINCE OF GEORGIA
REVIEW OF POTENTIAL HOST ROCKS FOR RADIOACTIVE WASTE DISPOSAL IN THE PIEDMONT PROVINCE OF GEORGIA
The disposal of radioactive waste in the proper geologic environment offers a high potential for isolating the waste from man's environment for the period of time required for the waste to decay to innocuous levels. As part of the National Waste Terminal Storage Program, the Savannah River Laboratory has responsibility for studies related to the storage of waste in the geologic environment in the Southeast.
Identifying remaining socio-technical challenges at the national level: Czech Republic
Identifying remaining socio-technical challenges at the national level: Czech Republic
This report describes the history, recent developments and the current situation of the management of highly radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel in the Czech Republic, with a particular focus on the development of geological disposal for this kind of waste. Special attention is given to the interplay of social and technical aspects of the process. The first chapter gives an overview of the state of affairs and sketches out the trajectories leading to it.

Expert Judgement in Performance Assessment
Expert Judgement in Performance Assessment
Proposals to site, construct and operate a radioactive waste disposal facility in Sweden will be supported by performance assessments (PAs). Such PAs will require a range of expert judgements to be made. As part of SKI’s preparation for reviewing SKB’s Pas and for conducting independent PAs, SKI has identified a need for further research on the treatment of expert judgement in PA.

Regional Geological Assessment of the Devonian-Mississippian Shale Sequence of the Appalachian, Illinois, and Michigan Basins relative to Potential Storage/Disposal of Radioactive Wastes
The thick and regionally extensive sequence of shales and associated clastic sedimentary rocks of Late Devonian and Early Mississippian age has been considered among the “nonsalt geologies” for deep subsurface containment of high-level radioactive wastes.
The Monitored Retrievable Storage Facility: Scoping the Environmental Assessment Process
The Monitored Retrievable Storage Facility: Scoping the Environmental Assessment Process
Reaching negotiated agreement with a state or Indian tribe and preparing of 1he environmental assessment (EA) required by Section 404 of the Nuclear Waste Policy Act, as amended (NWPAA), are the first steps in a process intended to result in the acceptance of radioactive waste at a monitored retrievable storage (MRS) facility starting in 1998. This paper examines requirements for the EA, the first environmental document to be prepared for siting an MRS facility, and discusses the process used to develop that document.
