DOE Office Director for Siting and Disposal, Juan Uribe, participated in a panel at the Organization of Agreement States Annual Meeting in Nashville, TN. Juan was joined by Molly Cripps, Braden Stover, and Mike Magill, all spokespersons from across Tennessee, to discuss building the future of Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campuses from a Tennessee perspective. Topics ranged from technical and economic considerations to how to engage various public audiences with a wide variety of understanding about the nuclear fuel cycle.

DOE Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Spent Fuel and High-Level Waste Disposition, Marla Morales participated in a webinar with the American Nuclear Society’s CEO, Craig Piercy, to discuss what’s next for Idaho, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Utah, the five states DOE selected to continue discussions toward Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campus locations. Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campuses are an effort launched this year to rebuild and modernize the nation’s full nuclear fuel cycle by co-locating functions such as fuel fabrication, enrichment, reprocessing used nuclear fuel, and disposition of waste. Innovation Campuses will be established through voluntary federal-state partnerships designed to advance manufacturing and regional economic growth, enhance national energy security and build a coherent end-to-end nuclear strategy for the country. The US Department of Energy has selected five States to continue discussions to host a Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campuses. Utah, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Idaho signed Memorandums of Understanding with the U.S. Department of Energy to continue exploring the opportunity to become host sites. Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campuses are a new effort to modernize the nation’s full nuclear fuel cycle by co-locating functions such as fuel fabrication, enrichment, reprocessing used nuclear fuel, and disposition of waste.

Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campus Request for Information closed on April 1, 2026 – The submission period for the request for information for the establishment of nuclear lifecycle innovation campuses closed on April 1, 2026. The next step in the process is for DOE to review the submissions. Thank you to all the States that submitted documents. DOE will officially announce the next steps in the coming months.

CBS Consortia ends after over two-plus years of collaboration – In March 2026, the CBS consortia program came to an end after over two years of public outreach and collaboration. Born out of the need to expand nationwide efforts to share information about collaboration-based siting efforts to site a facility to manage used nuclear fuel storage and disposition, the consortia of 12 organizations hosted and attended over 550 engagements including 25 Tribal engagements and over 90 government engagements. The consortia issued over 36 community grants and completed 48 information resource projects. Consortia members came from academia, government, nonprofits, and other organizations, demonstrating a national dialogue around nuclear energy and used nuclear fuel.
