Recommendations on the Proposed Monitored Retrievable Storage Facility
Recommendations on the Proposed Monitored Retrievable Storage Facility
The Clinch River MRS Task Force was appointed in July 1985 by the Roane County Executive and the Oak Ridge City Council to evaluate the Monitored Retrievable Storage (MRS) facility proposed by the Department of Energy to be constructed in the Roane County portion of Oak Ridge. After several months of study, numerous public meetings, site visits to relevant facilities, and careful evaluation of the integrated MRS concept, it is the considered opinion of the Task Force that the facility could be safely build and operated in Roane County/Oak Ridge.

Recovering Public Trust and Confidence in Managing Radioactive Waste
Recovering Public Trust and Confidence in Managing Radioactive Waste
The director of the Task Force on Civilian Radioactive Waste Management of the Secretary of Energy Advisory Board, United States Department of Energy, asked the National Academy of Public Administration, to convene a group of approximately one dozen individuals to attend a twoday "state-of-the-art" workshop on the issue of how institutions establish, maintain, or recover trust and confidence among significant members of their task environments.
Public Involvement in Radioactive Waste Management Decisions
Public Involvement in Radioactive Waste Management Decisions
This report analyzes public participation as a key component of this openness, one that provides a means of garnering acceptance of, or reducing public opposition to, DOE's radioactive waste management activities, including facility siting and transportation.

Report of the Peer review Panel on the Early Site Suitability Evaluation of the Potential Repository Site at Yucca Mountain, Nevada
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Yucca Mountain Site Characterization Project Office (YMPO) assigned Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), the Technical and Management Support Services (T&MSS) contractor to the YMPO, the task of conducting an Early Site Suitability Evaluation (ESSE) of the Yucca Mountain site as a potential site for a high-level radioactive waste repository.
REGION-TO-AREA SCREENING METHODOLOGY FOR THE CRYSTALLINE REPOSITORY PROJECT
REGION-TO-AREA SCREENING METHODOLOGY FOR THE CRYSTALLINE REPOSITORY PROJECT
The Crystalline Repository Project (CRP) of the Department of Energy's Civilian Radioactive Waste Management Program is responsible for identifying sites which could be considered by the Department for construction and operation of the second deep geologic repository for permanent disposal of high-level radioactive waste. The CRP is currently evaluating exposed and near surface crystalline rock bodies in three geographic regions in an effort to identify potentially suitable rock bodies for continued evaluations and eventual field investigations.
Waste Isolation Projects - FY 1977
Waste Isolation Projects - FY 1977
The primary goal of the ongoing LLL program is to develop the technology and data base required to license a nuclear repository in a crystalline rock medium, located at or near the Nevada Test Site (NTS). Our secondary goal is to apply this technology in helping the Department of Energy (DOE) develop repositories in other media and locations.

Summary of National and International Radioactive Waste Management Programs 1979
Many nations and international agencies are working to develop improved technology and industrial capability for nuclear fuel cycle and waste management operations. The effort in some countries is limited to research in university laboratories on treating low-level waste from reactor plant operations.

10 CFR Part 960 - General Guidelines for the Recommendation of Sites for Nuclear Waste Repositories
The Department of Energy, Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management, today proposes to amend its General Guidelines for the Recommendation of Sites for Nuclear Waste Repositories. The DOE is proposing these amendments to clarify and focus the Guidelines to be used in evaluating the suitability of the Yucca Mountain site in Nevada for development as a repository.

Performance Assessment of the Proposed Monitored Retrievable Storage Facility
Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL) has completed a performance evaluation of the proposed monitored retrievable storage (MRS) facility. This study was undertaken as part of the Department of Energy MRS Program at PNL.
Nuclear Waste: Operation of Monitored Retrievable Storage Facility is unlikely by 1998
Nuclear Waste: Operation of Monitored Retrievable Storage Facility is unlikely by 1998
DOE requested $100 million over the next 3 years to develop an MRS facility by 1998. DOE can begin accepting delivery of utilities’ waste by 1998 only by having an MRS facility then. To accomplish this, however, the Nuclear Waste Negotiator must complete a siting agreement and obtain congressional approval of the agreement, including the removal of statutory links to repository development, by the end of 1992. The negotiator does not believe this is possible.

Whether DOE is legally obligated to store or dispose of waste in 1998 is unclear.
Revising America's Nuclear Waste Policy
Revising America's Nuclear Waste Policy
With the first 100 days of the Obama Administration behind us, the Institute for 21st Century Energy presents this nuclear waste policy document that recounts the history of the country’s nuclear waste policy, discusses the mechanics of the issue, and offers specific recommendations to the Obama Administration and the U.S. Congress.
Underlying Yucca Mountain: The Interplay of Geology and Policy in Nuclear Waste Disposal
Underlying Yucca Mountain: The Interplay of Geology and Policy in Nuclear Waste Disposal
Nuclear waste disposal in the USA is a difficult policy issue infused with science, technology, and politics. This issue provides an example of the co-production of scientific knowledge and politics through public policy. The proponents of a repository site at Yucca Mountain, Nevada, argue that their decision to go ahead with the site is based on ‘sound science’, but the science they use to uphold their decision is influenced by politics. In turn, the politics of site selection has been altered by the scientific knowledge produced.

Technical Basis Report For Surface Characteristics, Preclosure Hydrology, And Erosion
This study presents a synthesis of information and interpretations relevant to surficial processes at the Yucca Mountain Site. The report is part of the technical basis which will be used to evaluate the suitability of Yucca Mountain, Nevada, as a site for a mined geologic repository for the permanent disposal of high-level radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel. It provides a description of the surface characteristics, preclosure hydrology, and erosion at the Yucca Mountain Site. This report will provide the technical basis to evaluate three technical guidelines from the U.S.

Evaluation of Potential Economic Impacts of 40 CFR Part 197: Public Health and Environmental Radiation Protection Standards for Yucca Mountain, Nevada
The information presented in this EIA has demonstrated that the design of a repository for disposal of radioactive wastes at Yucca Mountain has evolved without having been affected by the EPA standards. The standards have been demonstrated to have no impact on repository program costs, and nominal performance for the current repository design would result in no radiation doses for more than 10,000 years. Additionally, the difference between a 25 mrem/yr dose standard and a 15 mrem/yr standard is insignificant to program costs and performance evaluations.
Letter from Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant
Letter from Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant
Governor Bryant sent a letter to Pete Lyons, Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy regarding the state hosting a geologic repository for spent nuclear fuel as an alternative to the Yucca Mountain repository . Although some communities may have expressed interest to DOE, Governor Bryant is opposed to hosting a repository and asks DOE to consider any state other than Mississippi.
