SRS PUBLIC INVOLVEMENT IN WASTE MANAGEMENT HAS RESULTED IN EFFECTIVE DECISIONS SUPPORTED BY THE PUBLIC INCLUDING DISPOSAL CHANGES AND TOP-TO-BOTTOM REVIEW INITIATIVE CONSENSUS
In the Savannah River Site’s (SRS’) Solid Waste Management Program, a key to success is the Public Involvement Program. The Solid Waste Division at SRS manages the site’s transuranic, low-level, mixed, and hazardous wastes.

RADIOACTIVE WASTE ISOLATION IN SALT: SPECIAL ADVISORY REPORT ON THE STATUS OF THE OFFICE OF NUCLEAR WASTE ISOLATION'S PLANS FOR REPOSITORY PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT
Repository performance assessment is analysis that identifies events and processes that might affect a repository system for isolation of radioactive waste, examines their effects on barriers to waste migration, and estimates the probabilities of their occurrence and their consequences. In 1983 Battelle Memorial Institute's Office of Nuclear Waste Isolation (ONWI) prepared two plans — one for performance assessment for a waste repository in salt and one for verification and validation of performance assessment technology. At the request of the U.S.

LESSONS LEARNED FROM YUCCA MOUNTAIN: HOW TO IMPROVE THE PROCESS IN THE UNITED STATES FOR DEVELOPING FACILITIES FOR GEOLOGIC DISPOSAL OF USED NUCLEAR REACTOR FUEL AND HIGH-LEVEL RADIOACTIVE WASTE
This white paper offers some suggestions about how to improve the process in the United States for developing facilities for geologic disposal of used nuclear reactor fuel and high-level radioactive waste. These suggestions look toward the future, and build on what I believe are the lessons that should be learned from the troubled Yucca Mountain repository project.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT Waste Isolation Pilot Plant
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT Waste Isolation Pilot Plant
The purpose of this document is to provide a summary of the environmental impact statement for the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) project. The Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the WIPP was published by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in April 1979. This document was reviewed and commented on by members of the general public, private organizations, and governmental agencies. The Final Environmental Impact Statement was subsequently published in October, 1980.
Survey of National Programs for Managing High-Level Radioactive Waste and Spent Nuclear Fuel
Survey of National Programs for Managing High-Level Radioactive Waste and Spent Nuclear Fuel
The creation of high-activity, long-lived radioactive waste is an inevitable consequence of generating electricity in nuclear power plants. It also is an inevitable consequence of engaging in a set of activities associated with national defense, ranging from propelling nuclear submarines to producing the fissionable materials needed to construct nuclear weapons. Early in the nuclear era, the very-longterm management and the ultimate disposition of those wastes was not a high priority.

Public Draft - National Plan for Siting High-Level Radioactive Waste Repositories and Environmental Assessment
The National Plan for Siting High-Level Radioactive Waste Repositories describes the process the Department of Energy (DOE) is using to find sites suitable for disposal of high-level radioactive waste.
Summary of National and International Radioactive Waste Management Programs 1979
Summary of National and International Radioactive Waste Management Programs 1979
Many nations and international agencies are working to develop improved technology and industrial capability for nuclear fuel cycle and waste management operations. The effort in some countries is limited to research in university laboratories on treating low-level waste from reactor plant operations.
10 CFR Part 960 - General Guidelines for the Recommendation of Sites for Nuclear Waste Repositories
10 CFR Part 960 - General Guidelines for the Recommendation of Sites for Nuclear Waste Repositories
The Department of Energy, Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management, today proposes to amend its General Guidelines for the Recommendation of Sites for Nuclear Waste Repositories. The DOE is proposing these amendments to clarify and focus the Guidelines to be used in evaluating the suitability of the Yucca Mountain site in Nevada for development as a repository.

Development of Site Suitability Criteria for the High Level Waste Repository for Lawrence Livermore Laboratories
This report presents the results of our mining, geological
and geotechnical studies provided in support of the development
of site suitability criteria for the high level waste
repository. This work was performed in accordance with our
unsolicited proposal to LLL dated January 1977 and authorized
by the University Purchase Order 6115603.

THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY'S ATTEMPT TO SITE THE MONITORED RETRIEVABLE STORAGE FACILITY (MRS) IN TENNESSEE, 1985-1987
This report is concerned with how America's public sector is handling the challenge of implementing a technical, environmental policy, that of managing the nation's high-level nuclear waste, as reflected in the attempt of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to site a Monitored Retrievable Storage Facility (MRS) for high-level radioactive waste in Tennessee.

Department of Energy Plans for Developing a Monitored Retrievable Storage Facility
The U.S. Congress authorized the development of a monitored retrievable storage facility (MRS) as part of the high-level radioactive waste management system. The MRS will be used to receive, store, and stage shipments of intact spent fuel to the permanent repository. Early development of the MRS is crucial to honoring the long-standing Federal commitment to timely and adequate waste acceptance. The Department of Energy's (DO E) objective is initial waste acceptance at the MRS beginning in 1998.

Report of Early Site Suitability Evaluation of the Potential Repository Site at Yucca Mountain, Nevada
This study evaluated the technical suitability of Yucca Mountain, Nevada, as a potential site for a mined geologic repository for the permanent disposal of radioactive waste. The evaluation was conducted primarily to determine early in the site characterization program if there are any features or conditions at the site that indicate it is unsuitable for repository development. A secondary purpose was to determine the status of
knowledge in the major technical areas that affect the suitability of the site.

Recommendations on the Proposed Monitored Retrievable Storage Facility
Recommendations on the Proposed Monitored Retrievable Storage Facility
The Clinch River MRS Task Force was appointed in July 1985 by the Roane County Executive and the Oak Ridge City Council to evaluate the Monitored Retrievable Storage (MRS) facility proposed by the Department of Energy to be constructed in the Roane County portion of Oak Ridge. After several months of study, numerous public meetings, site visits to relevant facilities, and careful evaluation of the integrated MRS concept, it is the considered opinion of the Task Force that the facility could be safely build and operated in Roane County/Oak Ridge.
