Occupational Risk Consequences of the Department of Energy's Approach to Repository Design, Performance Assessment, and Operation in the Yucca Mountain License Application

EPRI has discovered several aspects of the U.S Department of Energy (DOE) proposed design and operation of the Yucca Mountain repository that—if implemented as described in the license application (LA)—could result in unnecessary occupational health and safety risk to workers involved with repository-related activities. This report identifies key DOE conservatisms and focuses on the occupational risk consequences of the DOE's approach to the repository design, performance assessment, and operation.

AN ANALYSIS OF INJURIES AT DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY WORK SITES

The Construction Industry Research and Policy Center (CIRPC) at the University of Tennessee was awarded a contract by the Center to Protect Workers’ Rights, under their grant program with the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), to analyze injuries of employees of the U. S. Department of Energy (DOE) and their contractors’ working at DOE work sites. The injury data analyzed were injuries recorded in DOE’s Computerized Accident Incident Reporting System (CAIRS).

From Three Mile Island to the Future Improving Worker Safety and Health In the U.S. Nuclear Power Industry

The Blue Ribbon Commission on America’s Nuclear Future (BRC) asked us to study whether
occupational safety and health conditions in today's U.S. nuclear industry are reasonably safe,
and if those conditions have improved since the Three Mile Island event in 1979. The BRC also
asked us to look to the future, to try to anticipate worker safety and health risks that should be
addressed by the industry, its government regulators and private watchdogs.

Frequency and Quality of Radiation Monitoring of Construction Workers at Two Gaseous Diffusion Plants

Construction workers were and are considered temporary workers at many construction sites. Since WWII, large numbers of construction workers were employed at US DOE nuclear weapons sites for periods ranging from a few days to over 30 years. Stepwise Approach to Decision Making for Long-term Radioactive Waste Management Experience, Issues and Guiding Principles

The context of long-term radioactive waste management is being shaped
by changes in modern society. Values such as health, environmental protection

LONG-TERM ENVIRONMENTAL SURVEILLANCE AND HEALTH RISK ASSESSMENT

This research brief is addressing the governance issues associated with the practical implementation of long-term environmental surveillance systems on the one hand, and the health impact assessment related to radioactive waste disposal installations on the other hand. Based on feedback experiences associated with the surveillance of nuclear installations, the analysis is focused on governance stakes (how to involve local stakeholders, which information is meaningful, how to transfer the surveillance system between generations...) according to the expectations of the local stakeholders.
