Recommended new criteria for the selection of nuclear waste repository sites in Columbia River basalt and U.S. Gulf Coast domed salt

Screening criteria and specifications are recommended to aid in the evaluation of sites proposed for nuclear waste disposal in basalt and domed salt. The recommended new criteria proposed in this report are intended to supplement existing repository-related criteria for nuclear waste disposal. The existing criteria are contained in 10 CFR 60 sections which define siting criteria of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), and ONWI 33(2) which defines siting criteria of the Office of Nuclear Waste Isolation (ONWI) for the Department of Energy.

A review of the Nuclear Waste Disposal Problem

Dealing with the problems posed by nuclear waste management is a major issue confronting continued use of the nuclear fuel cycle. Large amounts of radioactive wastes have already been generated as a result of past nuclear reactor operations, but these wastes are being temporarily kept in aboveground storage facilities awaiting a government policy decision on final disposition. Although research on various technologies to dispose of radioactive wastes is given high priority, a commercial waste disposal facility is not expected to be in operation before 1985.

Report to the President by the Interagency Review Group on Nuclear Waste Management

Report to the President from the Interagency Review Group on Nuclear Waste Management (IRG) established last March at the direction of the President. In October a draft report was offered for public review, and extensive comments were received. This final report presents the findings, policy considerations, and recommendations reached by the IRG as of this date.

SCOPING STUDY OF SALT DOMES, BASALTS AND CRYSTALLINE ROCK AS RELATED TO LONG TERM RISK MODELING FOR DEEP GEOLOGIC DISPOSAL OF NUCLEAR WASTE

The purpose of this study is to provide a preliminary geotechnical data base sufficient to initiate the development of Long-Term Risk Models (LTRM), for salt domes, basalt and crystalline rock, and identify technical issues requiring additional investigation.

Radioactive Wastes: Publc Attitudes toward Disposal Facilities

Although some observers have concluded that the technology required to assure safe disposal of nuclear wastes is currently available, others have expressed concern about the stability of the institutions that might be required to maintain the isolation of nuclear wastes. Questions about institutional stability and other factors associated with nuclear power and nuclear waste have been the subject of some study in public opinion research.
