Abstract

Presentation made at International Conference on The Management of Spent Nuclear Fuel from Nuclear Power Reactors, An Integrated approach to the Back-End of the Fuel Cycle (IAEA-CN-226). The purpose of the conference was to highlight the importance of an integrated long-term approach to the management of spent fuel from nuclear power reactors. The conference discussed progress achieved in connection with the back end of the nuclear fuel cycle as well as associated challenges, including the impact of decisions made at the front end, technological developments, the regulatory framework and safety aspects. The conference discussed advances in the management of spent fuel from nuclear power reactors since the inception of the IAEA conferences on this topic, most recently held in 2010 and 2006. Pending issues and anticipated future challenges will contribute to defining future programs of the IAEA in the field of managing spent fuel from nuclear power reactors.
