Commercial Spent Nuclear Fuel Igneous Scenario Criticality Evaluation

The purpose of this scientific analysis report, Commercial Spent Nuclear Fuel Igneous Scenario Criticality Evaluation, is to investigate the effects of an igneous intrusion event occurring in the repository on commercial spent nuclear fuel (CSNF) stored in waste packages. This activity supports the Postclosure Criticality Department's development of bounding (design-basis) configurations for loading specifications and the evaluation of features, events, and processes (FEPs) that could lead to waste package criticality.

EBS Radionuclide Transport Abstraction

The purpose of this report is to develop and analyze the Engineered Barrier System (EBS) Radionuclide Transport Abstraction Model, consistent with Level I and Level II model validation, as identified in Technical Work Plan for: Near-Field Environment: Engineered Barrier System: Radionuclide Transport Abstraction Model Report (BSC 2006 [DIRS 177739]). The EBS Radionuclide Transport Abstraction (or RTA) is the conceptual model used in the Total System Performance Assessment (TSPA) to determine the rate of radionuclide releases from the EBS to the unsaturated zone (UZ).

Number of Waste Packages Hit By Igneous Events

The purpose of this report is to document calculations of the number of waste packages that could be damaged in a potential future igneous event intersecting a repository at YuccaMountain. The analyses include disruption from an igneous intrusion and from an igneous eruption. The analyses also support the evaluation of the potential consequences from a future event as part of the total system performance assessment (TSPA) for the license application for the Yucca Mountain Project.

Probability of Criticality Before 10,000 Yearrs

The first objective of this calculation is the identification of the degraded configurations of the Enhanced Design Alternatives (EDA) II design that have some possibility of criticality and that can occur within 10,000 years of placement in the repository. The next objective is to evaluate the criticality of these configurations and to estimate the probability of occurrence for those configurations that could support criticality.

Criticality Potential of Waste Packages Affected by Igneous Intrusion

The objective of this calculation is to evaluate the criticality potential for co-disposal waste packages affected by an igneous intrusion disruptive event in the emplacement drifts. The scope of this calculation is limited to U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Spent Nuclear Fuel (SNF) types in DOE standardized SNF canisters or Multi-Canister Overpack (MCO) Canisters.
